Saturday was a very windy day and I didn't think I would get out fishin', but then, I like fishin' and found my way onto the water with Mike Thompson. We tried a lake about an hour north that he said had a reputation for some big panfish so we headed up there, put in our float tubes didn't catch anything except for a tiny bass I caught. We fished there for probably an hour and a half, but this lake wasn't going to put out anything for us.
Then I remembered talking to a friend just last week. He mentioned a small lake about a half hour from where we were that he said had some good panfish in it, so I talked MT into giving it a try. It was more of a pond than a lake, under 30 acres for sure, and curley leaf pond weed was growing like mad at our launch site. But once we got out a bit and off the weed edge I popped a couple crappies, then some gills, pretty nice ones too. We stayed the rest of the efternoon, catching lot's of crappies and bluegills tight lining, trolling in the tube, or vertical jigging plastics. Nothing huge, but not annoyingly small either. These fish were decent.
The size of the gills we caught, around the 8" mark with some a bit bigger...
Crappies ran between 9 and 10 inches. A couple might have exceeded the 10" mark.
MT's glow tubes really incited bites...
MT and his floating orange pumpkin...
Last gill of the day for me was this beautiful bluegill that checked in close to the 9" mark. It was getting dark so the picture didn't really capture the vivid colors...
MT walking up from the lake at the end of the day....
He reminds me of some sort of creature emerging from the primorial slime...
